With Nichelle Nichols we welcome a true icon of the science fiction genre at CCON | COMIC CON GERMANY, whose role as Nyoto Uhura in the classic Star Trek series has brought about two groundbreaking changes in the US media landscape. Firstly, in Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future, she portrayed the first African-American woman in a space series that was not only seen in a typical “black” role at the time (such as a housemaid). Nichelle was also the first African-American woman to go down in history to kiss a white man in the American media. We are talking about Captain Kirk (William Shatner) in the episode Plato’s Stepchildren. Because of this kissing scene (which could only be foreseen because of the camera position), some TV stations in the south of the United States boycotted the broadcast of the episode. When Nichelle Nichols decided to quit after the first season to pursue a career on Broadway, civil rights activist Martin Luther King changed her mind to continue as a role model in the series.
The Illinois-born actress was subsequently featured in the first six cinema adventures of the enterprise-crew: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) / Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) / Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) / Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) / Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) / Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991). For Star Trek: The Animated Series (1974), Nichelle Nichols gave her character the voice. She made another excursion into the animation universe with her character Nyoto Uhura in the series Futurama, where she also took on the role of speaker in the original English version. In 2007, the likeable actress took part in the role of Nana Dawson in Heroes (season 2).
Nichelle Nichols was allowed to immortalize her handprints in front of the famous “Grauman’s Chinese Theatre” in Hollywood and in 1992 she also received her own star on the “Hollywood Walk of Fame”. Until 1987, she was employed at NASA, where she promoted the next generation of astronauts in addition to performing representative tasks. With the asteroid “(68410) Nichols” a celestial body has been named after its name since 2001. In addition to acting, Nichelle also attracted attention as a singer. At the age of 16 she started her career in show business – alongside music legend Duke Ellington.
It is a great pleasure for us to welcome Nichelle Nichols live at CCON | COMIC CON GERMANY.
